Using The Library


Your Library Card for MCCPL
(Effective 7/1/12) 

 

Montgomery City-County Public Library (MCCPL) cards are issued to citizens of all ages. Children's cards require a parent's or guardian's signature. You may apply for a library card at any branch of our Public Library. A patron may have only one valid library card at any one time.

Library cards are free to all Montgomery County residents, to all employees of both the City of Montgomery and Montgomery County, and to all employees of agencies that receive over 50% of their funding from the City or County.

People applying for a library card must present documents that confirm their status as a resident of Montgomery County, Alabama. Acceptable documents are as follows:

 

  1. Alabama Driver's License
  2. Current utility bill in applicant's name with current address
  3. Motor vehicle registration at the current address
  4. Imprinted check with the current address
  5. Current lease/rental agreement
  6. Property tax statement for your current residence

If you do not choose to provide the Alabama Driver's License, then you must present any two of the other documents with current residential information printed by the issuer of the document.

Out-of-County (OCC) borrowers who live within a 50-mile radius of Montgomery County may apply for an OCC library card for a non-refundable fee of $50.00 per year. These borrowers may borrow media material as well for a separate non-refundable Media Service Fee of $30.00 per year in addition to the out-of-county library card fee.

Out-of-County borrowers who live beyond a 50-mile radius of Montgomery County may apply for an OCC library card for a non-refundable fee of $100.00 per year. These borrowers may borrow media material as well for a separate non-refundable Media Service Fee of $50.00 per year in addition to the out-of-county library card fee.

Out-of-County residents who are employees of the City of Montgomery or Montgomery County or agencies funded more than 50% by the City or County may receive a library card at no charge, with proof of employment.

Families living outside Montgomery County may apply for a library card for a non-refundable fee of $75.00 per year and may borrow media material for an additional non-refundable Media Service Fee of $30.00 per year. A "family" for this purpose is defined as one lineage living in the same home. Additional cards may be issued to individuals of the family for a single OCC card fee of $50.00 per year.

As a courtesy extended to our public schools, Montgomery Public School (MPS) teachers living outside Montgomery County may secure an out-of-county library card for a non-refundable fee of $15.00 per year with appropriate Alabama identification per library card issuance policies and proof of employment with MPS. Non-MPS teachers living outside Montgomery County may secure an OCC for the rates indicated above for non-residents.

In addition, all students attending college at one of the colleges/universities, trade schools, etc., in Montgomery County and residing in Montgomery County are allowed the same privileges as residents of Montgomery County.

Institutional Library Cards

An Institutional Library Card (ILC) is available to the business and professional community who have a presence in Montgomery County. The ILC should be used to support the information needs of the organizations and is not to take the place a personal library card. There is no fee for the card. The local organization should either send a letter to Library Administration requesting an application for an ILC card or stop by Library Administration to complete the application. The organization is held responsible for all late fees, fines and lost material checked out on the card.

 

Replacement library card fee: $2.00


Institutional Library Cards
An Institutional Library Card (ILC) is available to the business and professional community who have a presence in Montgomery County.

Loan Periods
The Loan Period is 3 weeks for all items except  VCR tapes (3 days) and DVDs which circulate for 7 days.

There is a 1-day grace period on all overdue library material. However, if the material is overdue for 3 or more days, the grace period is revoked and the patron is charged an overdue fine for all overdue days.

A patron may borrow a maximum of 15 items at a time. 5 items of media materials may be borrowed at a time (included in the total 15 items). To check out additional items, a patron must reduce the number of items already checked out to a quantity of less than 15.

Exception: Out-of-county families who purchase an out-of-county family card are allowed to borrow a maximum of 25 items at a time. Included in that total may be a maximum of 5 media items. To check out additional items, an out-of-county family card holder must reduce the number of items already checked out to a quantity of less than 25.

Borrowing privileges will be halted when a patron has 5 overdue items or when overdue charges reach a maximum of $10.00. Patrons who accumulate fines in excess of $10.00 must reduce the overdue charges below the maximum amount in order to have their borrowing privileges restored.

A book may be checked out and returned to any one of the library branches, regardless of the branch from which it was checked out.

Exception: Media materials such as books on cassettes, books on compact discs, videos, DVDs, music compact discs, children's kits, etc., can be checkout out and returned to the following designated libraries only: Juliette Hampton Morgan Memorial Library, E. L. Lowder Regional Library, Rufus A. Lewis Regional Library, Pike Road Branch Library, Pintlala Branch Library and Hampstead Branch Library.

A patron will be charged a $10.00 replacement fee, plus the cost of the book or media item, when an item is lost or damaged.


RENEWALS
You may renew materials at any branch location, unless someone has reserved the item.
To renew materials online, just follow these steps:

  1. From this website, click on "Our Catalog."
  2. Select "My Account".
  3. Enter your 14-digit library card number in the box listed at User ID, and your 4-digit PIN number.
  4. Select "Checkouts".
  5. Choose either "Renew Selected Items" and check the boxes of those items you wish to renew or click on "Select All."
  6. Click on "Renew" box.
  7. The screen will show those items renewed and indicate the new due date.

Patrons may renew library materials over the telephone by dialing 625-4999.  Library patrons may also call their respective branches to renew material over the telephone.


PLACE HOLDS

You may place holds on items in the catalog, and recommend items for purchase.

To Place a Hold:

(Note:  There is a .50  fee for each hold placed.)

  1. From this website, click on "Library Catalog."
  2. Search catalog by title, author, subject for individual items.
  3. Select "Place Hold" from left screen.
  4. Enter 14-digit library card number at User ID and 4-digit PIN number.
  5. Select the library where you would like to pick up your materials.
  6. Click on blue "Place Hold" box.


 


Fines and Fees

Overdue items are charged the following amounts for each day an item goes beyond its due date:

$.20 per day per Compact Disk

$.50 per day per Book on Tape

$1.00 per day per Videotape

Maximum overdue charges: $10.00
