The Round House by Louise Erdrich
Overview: One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a woman living on a reservation in North Dakota is attacked.  The details of the crime are slow to surface as Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and reluctant to reveal what happened, either to her husband, Bazil, and thirteen-year old son, Joe.  In one day, Joe's life is irrevocably transformed.  He tries to heal his mother, but she will not leave her bed and slips into an abyss of solitude.  Increasingly alone, Joe finds himself thrust prematurely into an adult world for which he is ill prepared.  ~Editor

Description:

Book Bunch book club will kick off the Fall/Winter meetings on September 10, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.  Members will discuss the novel Home to Harmony by Philip Gulley, which is the first book of the Harmony series. Come  enjoy the fun.

Book Jacket summary: Welcome to Harmony…a tiny town hidden beneath the staple in the Rand McNally Atlas. In these delightful stories, Sam Gardner, pastor of Harmony Friends Meeting, describes in a warm, down-home style the moving and humorous adventures of his first year leading his hometown church. Along with Sam, partake of the Friendly women’s Circle’s Chicken Noodle Dinner (their motto: "Meeting All Your Noodle Needs since 1964”). Experience small-town revival and the antics of Billy Bundle, the "World’s Shortest Evangelist.” Drop in at the coffee cup, where a painting of The Last Supper overlooks the salad bar…

If you’re tired of today’s fast-paced, complicated world, come home to Harmony, where the characters are quaint yet colorful, the mishaps familiar yet funny, and the moral of the story is always heartwarming and faith-inspiring.

Description:  We will discuss Belle: The Slave Daughter and the Lord Chief Justice by Paula Byrne."The illegitimate daughter of a captain in the Royal Navy and an enslaved African woman, Dido Belle was sent to live with her great-uncle, the Earl of Mansfield, one of the most powerful men of the time and a leading opponent of slavery. Growing up in his lavish estate, Dido was raised as a sister and companion to her white cousin, Elizabeth. When a joint portrait of the girls, commissioned by Mansfield, was unveiled, eighteenth-century England was shocked to see a black woman and white woman depicted as equals. Inspired by the painting, Belle vividly brings to life this extraordinary woman caught between two worlds, and illuminates the great civil rights question of her age: the fight to end slavery.”      ~Amazon.com
